Department of Botany
The Department of Botany was established in the Mahatma Gandhi College in the session 2010-2011 with one Part Time teacher (having 2 years of teaching experience) and very limited students. At present two faculties are engaged to nurture the students in life science. The course includes the diversity of plants, fungus and microbes and their economical importance, ethno botany, cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology and bioinformatics. A few students of the department are pursing master degree in SKBU and few are in different government services. Botany department will provided employment opportunities in educational institutes, pharmacy, agriculture, horticulture and forestry near future. Department of Botany at present taking the classes of Environmental Science under the CBCS program. The department conducts many educational tours in Sikkim, Ajodhya Hills and Central National Herbarium and surroundings. Every year the faculty of botany department visits the Maguria hill with all the students of the college for environmental science project.
In near future the department will open the honours courses and establish the myco-pathological laboratory for research work.
