From the Desk of the HOD, Deptt. of English
From the earliest days of Mahatma Gandhi College English has been regarded as a coveted subject for students to opt for. But in 1981 we had the option only for the Programme course. In 2002 the enthusiasm of students from local feeder schools and other schools of Purulia and the neighbouring district, Bankura, encouraged us to open an Honours Course in English. Challenges were there. At the time of the inception of the Honours Course, the Department found itself dependent solely on Part-Time Teachers. However, later situation improved gradually. And at present, the Department of English, as its faculties, has got one Associate Professor, two Assistant Professors and one State Level College Teacher.
Up to 2011, we had been affiliated with the University of Burdwan. In 2011 our district had its own Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University under the auspices of which we followed the same 1+1+1 pattern of Undergraduate studies until we switched over to the Choice Based Credit System from 2016-17.
Generally, before the start of the semester, we hold a meeting to modularize the syllabus, distribute the modules among our teachers, and determine our approach to specific texts. We also make it sure that we strike a balance between the traditional ‘Chalk &Talk’ method and the ICT-based teaching to make teaching more effective and time-efficient. Pertinent Films and documentaries are shown to increase the comprehensibility of certain modules. Lectures are often given with the accompaniment of Power Points. Social media, Whatsapp to be precise, is used for sharing study materials and also the digital link for students to attend online classes through Google Meet.
Our students run a departmental wall magazine, ‘The Mural Mind’ colourful editions of which are displayed on the departmental Notice Board. They also annually publish an online magazine, 'The Enmeshed Mind'. In cultural programmes, held in commemoration/celebration of different institutional, regional, national or international events we encourage our students to take part. Our students have taken part in Youth Parliament Competition and have secured first place in the Divisional level Quiz Contest.
Our teachers too, along with teaching, actively bear the responsibilities of an N.S.S. Programme Officer; execute duties as members of several Committees related to administration and students’ welfare; and function as editors of the peer-reviewed journal of the college, The Prism(ISSN-2229-7537).
We cherish the experience of running the UGC Sponsored One Year Certificate Course on Translation Proficiency from 2010-11 to 2013-14, in which the onus, shared by our departmental teachers, extended from the preparation of the syllabus through taking classes, organizing tests to the distribution of certificates.
We have organized seminars where teachers and students of the college have taken part. Students are encouraged to take part in impromptu departmental seminars or in a seminar on short notice. These are enjoyed by most of our students. In some cases, these seminars are taken under consideration for the internal assessment of our students.
Many of our pass outs opt for a Master's degree in English or a B.Ed. degree with a view to competing for the teaching job. A good number of the aspirants end up securing one. The recent trends, however, show a growing interest among our students in an array of jobs of which teaching is the most prominent one. This is the part where our department intends to put emphasis in the coming years ─ to introduce our students to persons, proficient in matters related to the job market, who are worthy enough to function as resource persons and can guide our students to the success they deserve.
